Jeff Serving in Willowtree
A lot of the grade 4-6 kids are really in to playing basketball and soccer. One of the boys is always really slow to get involved because he is less confident in his skills, so normally he will
One cool thing about our group of Teens Leading Communities (TLC) this year is how enthusiastic they are to be with the kids at Kids in Community (KIC) after school program and...
The start of the school year is always kinds of a funny time. Students are settling back in to school, and getting used to being at program, and testing by experimentation if the same
A couple weeks ago, near the end of our Grade 1-4 Kids in Community (KIC) program one of the boys started to feel sick. After program, we accompany the kids on the bus from Wellspring Worship...
This school year some of the high school students from Willowtree and I started a program that basically involves doing a Bible study and hanging out. It has been both really fun, and a good time in community, ...
This year at our EPIC tutoring program, we have been really blessed to have a number of new volunteers join us so that we have almost as many volunteers present as there are students. This has been really helpful in terms of providing assistance to children who are working on their homework, but I think it also provides a cool image of God's Kingdom.
A couple years ago we started a TLC program at Willowtree where we could do training and planning with the high school kids from the community who were interested in helping out with the younger kids programs. This year from February to March our main focus each week, at the program, was on having the TLCs plan March Break camp for the kids.
Sometimes kids do simple stuff that is really cool and reflects God's love to people around them. One example of this, recently, was seeing a couple of the Grade 5 girls on the way home from our EPIC program greet the TTC driver who sometimes drives on our route by name and spend a bit of time talking to him. It seems like a pretty small thing but for some reason it really stuck with me as a significant thing that they were interested to learn his name and then greet him by name each week that they saw him.
Sometimes kids provide an amazing model of forgiveness. One of the kids at our KIC program said something that upset his friend a lot As a result his friend was really upset, didn't want to talk to him, didn't want to sit near him and didn't want to be involved with him at all. While it seemed like it would take some time for the problem to be resolved probably about 10 minutes later they were already playing games together and laughing with one another and the rest of their friends.
Matthew 18:20 "where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them."
In my most recent newsletter I shared about how I really enjoyed spending time with our Jr. High students this past summer. It was a really good time to talk, laugh and experience life together. Spending time with the children and youth at our after-school programs this fall has again highlighted to me the joys of fellowship with one another.
that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. - Romans 1:12
One of the ways that I have seen God at work each summer that I have worked with TCM is the way that the kids develop a love for the new leaders and vice versa. The new leaders and the kids at camp are committed to get to know one another over 7 weeks through spending time together and doing activities together. It is amazing to hear both kids and leaders share how they have been impacted or encouraged and how much they value the relationships that they have built.
JEFF'S bio
Jeff first became involved with TCM as a Summer Intern in 2011, he continued to volunteer and soon after began serving as a full time Outreach Worker. He has witnessed Jesus at work in the lives of the kids and youths and looks forward to seeing what God has in store for them.
Jeff hopes that God would be at the centre of the community in Willowtree and that relationships would continue to be built with one another and with God.
I think that it is really important to listen to the insight and honesty of our youth and reflect on what we are teaching and sharing in our churches. Part of the problem in terms of youth attending and being connected with churches might be a result of a failure in truly presenting who God is.
