bring hope to families impacted by poverty.

+ Building Preventative Programs

During this challenging time we all recognize the need to care for the vulnerable in our city. In this critical period Toronto City Mission continues to help children, youth and families impacted by poverty. Despite the fears and uncertainties of COVID-19, our communities continue to face violence. Incidents such as stabbings and gun violence remain present in Flemingdon Park and Kingston-Galloway. Our goal for these communities is for God’s love to penetrate through each individual’s heart, transforming them to be positive influences in their community. You can do this by providing a safe environment for children to engage in positive activities online, youth to participate in weekly bible lessons, students to receive academic help in the midst of e-schooling, and supporting parents as they care for their children during this time of lockdown.

+ Building Relationships

When Rosa began attending KIC (Kids in Community) after-school program, she was well-spoken but chose not to speak with most of her peers. Always sitting out in game times, she would tell the staff often of how bored she was and only wanted to go home. No matter what anyone tried, she was just not interested. The team loved having her around when she came, but she did not feel the same way. We prayed desperately for her to love her time with us, and to desire a friendship with the other kids–to find community with us!

After a period of absence, Rosa walked in with a bright smile, a bright attitude, and this really crazy type of laughter I had never heard from her before. She started asking for people’s names (she never had interest before); became engaged during our Bible lessons; another particular kid she had quite a bit of difficulty with, she began getting along and laughed with; she continued to sit out in our game times, but would cheer and laugh with the others instead of sitting in dread as she had before. She had so much more life. It was truly a transformation beyond any of us, her parents, or even herself. It is the support of donors that allows the door for this relationship with Rosa to remain open.

+ Building Leaders

Michelle joined TCM through the TLC (Teens Leading Community) leadership program during the summer. She wanted to come back in the fall during the school year to volunteer with the KIC (Kids in Community) after school program because she loved everyone in the program. The TLC program has been a positive support in her social life and academic life. Michelle is always talking about how she loves the community and even invited her boyfriend to help and volunteer. Michelle has grown in her leadership skills, and started to come out of her shell. She gets along with the kids and her peers very well.

Michelle has also been very receptive in learning more about God and told Carmen, one of our staff, that she wants to start doing Bible devotions to learn more about God. Excited about this news, Carmen gifted her with a devotional book and Bible. Through the continued support of donors there is hope for Michelle to know Jesus as her Lord and Saviour, and be a Christ-like leader in her community.
